A pair of Red-tailed Hawks (RTHA) are nesting on Grace Church in
downtown Charleston, SC. The church is currently undergoing a $12
million restoration and renovation. It is less than three blocks from
my office, so I have been watching and photographing the nest since
February 2008. The first sign of activity I saw this year was St.
Patrick's Day, March 17, 2008. The birds were seen active in the
area and fresh greenery appeared in the nest. This is their
on-going story. (In reverse chronological order, if you want to
read from the beginning, go to the bottom of the page and read up!)
The Grace Church RTHAs have vanished. It is hard to say what happened, but the parents and the chicks are both gone. The local paper has this story covering the developments.
The Grace Church RTHAs have become famous! The local paper, the Charleston Post and Courier had a front page article about the hawks putting a halt on the construction work. The paper reports that the delay may cost as much as $60,000. It is a cost that could have been avoided -- the construction company should have known the nest was active. It is possible that the Church as a whole did not. I am impressed with the Church's response (see an interview with the Rector here), they were very accepting despite the delays and cost. I am also impressed with their commitment to restoring this history building. I would encourage you to consider donating to help with the restoration. If you choose to donate, please thank them for considering the birds in the comment line!
When I was over there today taking photos, there was a news crew from ABC News 4 taking footage and interviewing people. I chatted with them for a bit, but I hope they don't end up using any of the footage -- I was too nervous. I am more comfortable behind the camera. I guess we'll see tonight. I managed to get this shot of the proud parents side-by-side on the cross.
Things seem to have returned to normal for the proud parents. Today they spent a lot of time hanging out on the cross and getting harrassed by mockingbirds.
